Meetup – International Congress “Placer Deposits Russia and CIS”

On the eve of the International Congress Placers of Russia and CIS (2027, Yakutsk), we kindly invite you to a free strategic online meetup. This is an early stage in creating the industry agenda for major professional event of the year. The meetup was created as a space for open dialogue between the government and the industry, where not only current solutions are discussed, but also the long-term logic of the development of placer mining in Russia and the CIS.

Today, the industry is at a point of systemic change. Approaches to subsoil development are being reviewed, the role of the state in shaping mining priorities is being strengthened, the structure of investment decisions is changing, as well as requirements for the effectiveness and sustainability of projects. Today, placer mining remains one of the key segments of the Russian gold mining industry, providing a significant share in the total output of gold production in a number of regions of the Far East and Siberia.

According to industry estimates, up to 15–25% of annual gold production in Russia in some periods falls on placer deposits, while in a number of subjects of the Russian Federation this share is significantly higher and may reach a dominant value in the production structure.

The industry is characterised by high fragmentation: a significant part of projects are developed by medium and small subsoil users, for whom access to licensing, infrastructure and clear regulatory conditions are critical.

At the same time, the pressure of external factors is increasing:

the rising cost of logistics and energy supply in remote areas
stricter environmental requirements and control procedures
the shortage of prepared sites with clear geological knowledge
the need to increase technological efficiency without multiplying CAPEX growth

Against this background, government policy is becoming a key factor in the sustainability and development of the industry.

1. The growth of geological exploration and reproduction of reserves

Today, the largest companies are actively increasing the resource base of placer gold. In Yakutia, ALROSA’s structure – Anabara Diamonds – plans to supply 3.5 tonnes of placer gold at new sites to the state balance.

This shows that even with a high degree of development of the region, the potential of new placers remains.

2. Development of the Arctic zone

The most promising areas are shifting to the northern and hard-to-reach territories – Yakutia, Chukotka, Magadan Region, and Krasnoyarsk Territory.

Arctic placers are becoming economically interesting due to:

high gold prices;
development of winter roads and energy;
introduction of modular mobile production facilities;
state support for the Arctic.

3. Environmental transformation

Ecology is becoming the main factor in access to subsoil use.

Companies that can provide:

closed water cycle;
high-quality reclamation;
reducing the turbidity of rivers;
continuous environmental monitoring

they will gain an advantage in access to licenses and investments.

4. Technological modernisation

The future of the industry is directly related to technology:

digital geological exploration;
satellite monitoring;
using AI to search for promising sites;
unmanned vehicles;
automation of industrial devices;
modern water circulation and reclamation systems.
